The risk of being known

Baseball catcher. Soccer goalkeeper.

Growing up, those were the positions I chose to play.

As an adult, I wondered what those roles said about me.

Through the help of counseling, I discovered that I wanted to be included without getting too close.

My desire to be accepted was outmatched by my fear of being rejected.

For me, there was safety in distance.

Catcher and Keeper provided the protection I needed.

Over time, I discovered my fear of rejection was preventing me from being known.

I was strategically hiding my real self. What felt safe had become my trap.

It was blocking me from what I craved most: deep and meaningful relationships.

My solution required courage. Courage to be known.

It’s risky…it’s also why we’re here.

Come out from the safety of your protective places.

Enter into the joy of being known and accepted.
