Ladders can’t be climbed until they’re built

 

Summer construction work is how I paid my way through college.

Owning little-to-no skill meant I was handed a sledgehammer and directed towards what needed to be demolished. I was clearing the way for those who possessed the skill of building. 

My pay was in line with my lack of skill. Most anyone could perform my role, and I was easy to replace.

Not so with the carpenter.  

Their skills took a long time to hone and their finished product provided exceptional value for the business and customers. They were paid accordingly.

It’s similar in the workplace.

Swinging the sledgehammer of destructive criticism takes little skill. Anyone can perform that role, and many do.

Lowering the value of others simultaneously lowers your own value.

In contrast, influencers who have honed the craft of constructive coaching are rare because they know how to build others up. They are the “craftspeople” of the workplace—creating teams and cultures that deliver significant value for their organization and the customer.
