The power of their words

Act like a business partner rather than a consultant.

Early in my career, I was under the impression that my job was to bring really good answers to my clients.

I was grateful when one of my mentors pulled me aside and said, “Rich, never tell ‘em what you can ask ‘em.”

Hmmm. I was curious to know more. What he said next, changed me at my core:

“Their words are always more important than yours.”

Before you can expect to have a voice at the table, have the discipline to bring your ears to that table… along with some skillful questions.

Your willingness to ask, listen, and learn is more influential than your best answers.
